Globalization Time Capsule Project

Globalization Time Capsule Project
(Team project – 20 points)

The overall project:

Your final group assignment is to envision of how globalization will influence learning of the future. Based on what you have learned about the past, the present and the future of globalization, what should students know in your opinion to prepare themselves for uncertainty and more complexity? What would you change, emphasize or leave behind?

Through a methodology called Futures Literacy developed by UNESCO, you will consider the future of

learning in a globalized world. Through a worldwide used Futures Literacy Lab you’ll receive an introduction into Futures Literacy as a capability.  In groups you will create a time capsule that includes a vision of globalization for the year 2050 and a timeline that reflects your individual insights and the collective knowledge of your team.  Using the course readings and activities as the foundation for your project, conduct further research to generate scenarios and a timeline that demonstrates your understanding of the complexity and interconnectedness of globalization.  Be sure to include citations that document those sources that influenced your thinking.

Step by step:

From visions of the future to scenarios of the present

For Wednesday Nov 28th read the article provided about futures literacy to broadly familiarize yourself with this methodology.

Miller, R. 2011. “ Embracing Complexity and Using the FutureEthos.

Each intercultural team will begin the project by creating a first rough draft of a vision of the future of globalization — What will a globalized world look like in 2050 (#1)?  To do this, during class each group will generate two initial visions, one vision based on your prediction of what is probable and another based on what is preferable.  We will use a methodology called Causal Layered Analysis, which was pioneered by Sohail Inayatullah, to unpack each of these visions (#2).  Within your intercultural teams compare notes to reconcile these two visions into a third synthesized version of your vision. Now consider what needs to happen to make this vision of globalization become a reality. Through “backcasting” each group will build a timeline that describes what needs to occur today to make your synthesized vision a reality in the future (# 3). After completing your groupwork during class, finalize your vision of globalization circa 2050 and your timeline and upload it to your intercultural team page (#4).

Deadline December 4th, 6 pm Arlington time.  It will be important that your team meet this deadline, as our next class will involve a peer review of each team’s work.

From your vision of globalization to offering your view to the next generation of students:

During class each team will add a disruptive element to the timeline of another team by asking… What happens if… (#5)?  In your intercultural teams, discuss what this disruptive event means for the timeline you created and your vision regarding of the future of globalization. Broaden your perspective by taking into account the Demographic, Economic, Scientific, Technological, Ecological and Political (DESTEP) factors (#6) to create a fine-tuned, refined vision and again, specify your timeline of globalization. This is your final vision, and your final globalization timeline from the year 2018 to 2050 (#7). Now start thinking about the last question: Based on your vision of the future of globalization what advice would you offer to the next generation of global citizens, future students that enter the Global Village (#8)?

The required components of this final assignment are:

1) A stand-alone digital presentation or video and associated text script that includes:

  1. Your final vision of globalization in 2050
  2. A timeline of globalization events from 2018 to 2050: what needs to happen to make your final vision possible?
  3. Your advice to all educational institutes: How should we prepare students for this globalized world?
  4. Complete citations for all information sources consulted. Include YOUR original content only, including images, or video.

2) A separate WORD or Google document that outlines the text of the presentation with references to
information sources as well lists team member contributions. Note any members who contributed extra
efforts to make the final project a reality or had difficulty participating in the project.

3) Upload your team’s final presentation on your intercultural team page before December 11th 6 pm
Arlington time.

4) In class on December 13 we will show the final presentations during class.
