As self-reporting becomes more popular, blogging has offered untrained journalists an avenue for publishing their content. During this course, blog posts have been the primary means of expressing content learned in class. For example, the globalization timeline blog post 3 provided an opportunity for my first intercultural teamwork. Along the period of study personal insights have inspired notes such as analyzing the intellectual paradox from a point of view that is neither dominant nor suppressed. Coming to terms with motivations and effects of globalization has further been encouraged by the team discussions and class presentations.
Process of globalization
Globalization is mainly used in the context of business and sociology. The process describes how communities interact and integrate themselves into a functioning unit where they can meet their needs through trade and co-existence. The concept of the world as a ‘global village’ has been coined because the internet has bridged the distance between communities, institutions, and businesses. The result is we interact with people of different cultures every day at the touch of a button while businesses can reach customers in far countries. However, as noted in the blog on its timeline, the one constant in the process of globalization is its tendency to respect market forces and the desires of business leaders. As a result, it often takes resources from the weaker groups in favor of the group that is economically and technologically superior.
The process of intercultural communication
Intercultural communication has been demonstrated as for how different cultures perceive and behave towards each other when forced into contact by socioeconomic factors. For example, when I came to America certain biases clouded my reasoning and expectations especially based on religion and ethnicity. Since the expectation is often negative antisocial tendencies became common until when time and experience (intermingling between cultures and discussion groups) proved the beliefs to be wrong. For instance, coming to terms with women contributing more to society than just household chores opened my mind to the American way of life. I also believe that through the way I have conducted myself around college and Neighborhood, Americans have reason to believe not all Arabs are extremist/ or terrorist.
Relating globalization to intercultural communication
Globalization and intercultural communication are complementary factors that allow technological advancement to influence trade. For example, the internet has allowed business to reach far markets but it is critical that branding is assessed to ensure it does not send the wrong message. Take MacDonald’s setting up shop in India and publicizing ‘the big Mac beef burger.’ It likely sales will be very low as the cow is sacred in India. Likewise, in intercultural communication between individuals, it is necessary that each party takes time to come to terms with the beliefs of the other. For example, not all Arab men grow a beard and they are not terror agents if anything they are only human.
As per the introductory statements of van Aspen, fear is a really big motivator towards injustices. For example, the us-them mentality against radicals subjects innocents to negative reinforcement, what’s to say that the innocent won’t get depressed and do it anyway? It is important to remember that in a globalized economy, it is very easy to pass information around over the internet. Therefore, a single act of intercultural conflict will trigger a huge backlash which eventually is bad for business. This means that we are to build a truly global village and economy intercultural communication must be at the center of it.
Advice to future students
My advice to future students would be: 1) Maintain an open mind through this course, 2) read widely and broadly on the various philosophical aspects of social economic co-existence. 3) Whatever you do observe the submissions times!
