This past week we read started reading Toni Morrison’s the “Song of Solomon.” I have never read any of Toni Morrison’s work before.

The first thing I found interesting about Part 1 of the novel is that all of the women in the story have biblical names but not the men.

In class on Monday we discussed the power of names in the novel and I found that very interesting.

My Mom had always told me about my name and that it is very important to think about what you decide to name your children. I think about the names of my nephews and niece, all four of them have biblical names which I love.

We also read the chapter on oral history in our English Research book. I found this chapter very interesting. I can see how oral history relates to the “Song of Solomon.” As the reader you learn more about each character from hearing stories of their past or their relatives past. Even in the songs that are sung in Part 1 are oral history.

I completed reading the novel today and have enjoyed this book. There is so much to discuss about each character and the different themes of this story.
