With our reading assignment of reading Volume 1 of Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice”, and Textual Analysis in our “Research Methods for English Studies” I noticed how the two correlate. “Pride and Prejudice” refers to the tendency of the characters to judge one another based on preconceptions, rather than who they really are or what they actually do.
The novel mocks Elizabeth’s and Darcy’s biases, noting that mistakes happen to anyone. Prejudice is easy to spot in others but not in ourselves.
In our Textual Analysis chapter it states in page 169, “Any specific textual analysis is made at a particular historical moment and from within a specific culture”. This in and of itself gives the reader preconceived ideas of how they should be looking at the text.
The reader takes their limited knowledge of that era/time period (with their biases and mistakes) and analyses and interprets the text from that view.
Every individual brings their own slant or analysis to a text. Because of this you would think it would bring ambiguity to the text but for each individual reader it brings their truth of the story.
