After reading parts 1 & 2 of Sir Gawain and Visual Methodologies in Research Methods one of the main connections that I see through the semiology of the story Gawain is shown as Christ.

The book states Gawain has five virtues, these virtues are friendship and fraternity with fellow men, purity and politeness/kindness and pity. Throughout Parts 1 & 2 it talks about Gawain’s good character and that he is virtuous and noble.

He also wears a symbol, the pentacle painted in pure gold. In Section 2 line 622 it states, “…he looked well in what he wore, and was worthy of it…” In line 627 it states, “…the form of the figure of the five-pointed star and each line overlaps and links with the last so is ever eternal, and when spoken of in England is known by the name of the endless knot.”

I believe he is also compared to Christ when it states in line 633, “For Gawain was as good as the purest gold– devoid of vices but virtuous, loyal and kind…A prince who talked the truth”.

Once Gawain found a castle that takes him in from his long travels, they help him take off his armor and he is clothed in flowing and colorful gowns that are beautifully embroidered and finished with the finest fur. It even states in line 882, he is “resplendently dressed”.
