Based on the article do you think the following statement is a good thing or a bad thing and why?

    • TikTok gives a chance to everyone to become a success by providing a platform for their content. The content on TikTok is primarily video content, little known artists, comedians or content creators in general can get worldwide acclaim for their content based on how much acclaim the content received from viewers and other TikTok users. ‘Stupid’ by Ashnikko is an example of a video that became a success due to the platform (Thurrott, 2019).
One of the bad sides of TikTok is cyberbullying. People with disabilities and content with people with disabilities or about people with disabilities are easily targeted by cyberbullies(Anderson, 2020). This creates a huge problem for TikTok because as much as the platform is meant to promote content, it easily becomes a weapon against the vulnerable in society.
The handling of Politically and religiously sensitive content is also one of the dark sides of TikTok (Webb & Webb, 2020). Over the years, people have been known to post jihadist videos on Tiktok, cryptic videos and even videos to encourage oppression about nations with political instability (Mackenzie & Nichols, 2020). TikTok has found it hard to manage these situations. The video by Feroza Aziz is an example of how TikTok handles the situation as her account was only suspended shortly before it was reinstated.

    • 1. Based on the article do you think the following statement is a good thing or a bad thing and why?
Cite the article at least three times in your answer.
I think the author is just placing a warning to the users of TikTok or those who want to know what TikTok is about. We already know that Facebook already does a lot of the things that TikTok is accused of because “of the China Internet Security Law, ByteDance is legally unable to refuse to share its data with the Chinese government.” Unlike twitter who kinda has a more secure way to protect what people tweet and located in the US, they have more freedom to protect users. Even in the article, it does mention how TikTok got its fame in the first place saying, “TikTok broadened the scope of its content to match that of Vine’s, promoting displays of comedy, talent and the infamous dramatic lip-syncing of songs.” In addition, this fame also has to do with the wide range of availability of the app “Now available in 150 markets and in 75 languages, the app has collected over 1.5 billion users globally — that’s billion with a “B.” ‘ Even with such a big thing it tends to have its own problems. Hence the warning that the author puts out there for new users.

      2. Why or why not is TikTok a good performance media platform?
Cite at least three articles in addition to this one.
If the goal of the performance media is aimed at teens to young adults, then it would seem to be a very good platform to engage with the audience. The article citing that ” In fact, 60% of TikTok’s active U.S. users are between 16 and 24. ” Keeping in mind the main audience that we aim for is a good way to make sure what we use as a platform. However, if our audience is to help those with disabilities then it won’t be a good place to be as ” People with
disabilities are among the most underrepresented groups in media and decreasing their social media presence only exacerbates the problem of people underestimating how prevalent disabilities and marginalized identities truly are. ” Also with the part of data protection, one has to be aware that ” Even though TikTok is banned in China, its creator company ByteDance is based in Beijing and so falls prey to the country’s strict censorship laws.” Which goes back to the previous quote that mentioned how they still have to give data to China even if they do not want it in the first place.

What you learned and how it is relevant to Marymount’s ethics week on immigration?

    MYTHS AND FACTS ABOUT IMMIGRANTS

    • An important thing going into ethics week is the knowledge that refugees are legally allowed to be in this country. There is the stigma that immigrants come here illegally, when in fact immigration is granted by the government.

    • It is important to learn that immigrants really are paying taxes like most Americans. Even with the fact that they pay almost 8% of their income to taxes, which is even more than the wealthier people do in the country.

    • After reading the facts and interview people’s knowledge on the subjec, I believe this topic should be spread more and more to educate people.

    • From reading this article I learned that there exist many myths about immigrants, and I also saw the connection between these myths and common stereotypes. The most interesting fact I learned is that native-born citizens are more likely to get incarcerated.

The best video I watched was posted by Rudebone, who is African artist. Rudebone. The video was a dance video, what made it special was the background. The dancer danced in front of agricultural farm implements associated with rural setups. This presented the context of the video in a manner that could be understood by the audience. The song also presented the intention of the video, which was to support people in rural areas of Africa. The least effective video I watched was by Savana, it was about a leopard gecko feeding (Savana, 2019). The video completely missed the point, there was no dancing involved, the message was also not what was intended by the campaign.

      #2
The TikTok video by on the #Danceforclimate platform by Sari Aalto was the best of the six videos I watched. It met all the requirements of the campaign and used images that young people can easily relate to. The video is about a young lady with a monkey on her arms. She then realizes that the temperature around her was becoming extreme, the climate was becoming too hot in some areas and too cold in other. The images of the polar bear and a sticker asking ‘what can you do’ and ‘what can I do’ show how much the situation has escalated. It also gave certain solutions to some of the climatic issues the world was facing. Some of these included driving less. This is definitely to prevent too much carbon emission into the atmosphere. Another was the recycling of waste, especially plastics. Plastics are indeed some of the biggest threats to climate due to their production. The least effective video I watched was #1 Simple IDEAS, Save MONEY (PART 1) by Hrutul. First of all, the video completely missed the point because it focused on a different topic, which was not climate change. Instead, it was about saving money.

TikTok is a good platform for performance media-based campaigns. First, this is because TikTok has a large number of users (Anderson, 2020). Videos on TikTok have been known to attract over 100 million views for personal videos. It is, therefore, a very powerful tool that can be used for media-based campaigns. The stipulated size of videos on TikTok is another reason why it is can be effective for these campaigns (MS, 2019). The videos posted have to be precise, and at the same time, meet the requirements of the campaign. The platform is also mainly used by young people in society (MS, 2019). Most of the creative people in society today are young stars, this makes it easy for campaigns to get as much content as required.
      #4
#DanceForDiversityAndInclusion would be an excellent campaign to encourage youngsters to embrace diversity. The world today is faced with a situation that has existed for ages. Many are yet to embrace cultural, ethnic, racial and other forms of diversity. Racism persists to date and the world leaders appear to be numb about the current situations. A campaign on embracing each other despite the cultural, racial and ethnic differences that exist can be a good campaign. Many are likely to embrace it and, in the end, it will have a positive impact on society.

    • I found rudebone who danced in the middle of a goat farm that actually gives the idea of what the goal of the hashtag was about. However, one girl simply did her makeup without actually dancing but still using the hashtag, so it would be confusing if that would count for the petition.

The best one for #Forclimate was cfpatrik who showed where he send a mountain of plastic bottles to a recycling center and then showed an event where people were gonna clean up a public space. Another effective one showed how to use a newspaper as a bag instead of using it for plastic ones. The least effective was one of a girl that just sat down as she was passing a guy, which didn’t show much of how she was helping the planet.

A new topic would be things to keep clean while this pandemic is happening, such as remotes or keyboards not just washing our hands. Even ways to still engage with people online even when we can’t go outside, or just by calling or facetiming.

As a comment to this post answer the following questions:

How can this be applied to a performance media initiative?
How can this be used maliciously?

    A YouTuber’s fancy […]

    • 1. For performance Media initiatives the opportunities are endless. Using places like Ikea gives us resources to create sets without needing a lot of money. It also is an interesting way to test if social media followers can see if they’re being tricked (like this video).

      2. Pretending to be somewhere you’re not adds more deceit to social media.

    • 1- I think , with the several media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Linked-Inn, WhatsApp, YouTube etc., information that is important can be targeted to a specific groups of people. With the performance media initiative, an online platform like Facebook that has lots of subscribers can be used to communicate useful information about anything. By using a platform page that has a lot of likes from people, the message can be targeted groups of people with an aim of passing crucial information to them. This can enhance media and information coverage especially with the platforms that have a lot of subscribers and likes.

2- I think, the media life can be used in a malicious manner in several ways. Given that a lot of people do subscribe to various media platforms, various people misuse these platforms in an ill-manner to benefit themselves only. First, the online platforms can be used to solicit for funds. By coming up with a false way of seeking sympathy, most of the known people or celebrities can be trusted into receiving certain favors from the online subscribers. Secondly, the online platforms expose falsified lives by various people. Most people do not want to look like they are suffering, but rather seem to be well-off and create some form of mindset about them to various people.

    • This can be applied to a performance media initiative because the video demonstrates how broad the online world is. It also demonstrates how people have become so dependent on social media, I think it could be a great way to get others to face reality.

This can be used maliciously because it is deceiving. Influencers can provide false information and create conflict within society.

As a comment to this post answer the following questions:Which of the art initiatives is the most effective approach to transforming the lives of refugees and what?
    If you feel […]

    • I think the most effective art initiatives are the ones that are twofold; they bring art to the refugees and help them learn skills to manage their situation. I thought the example that taught art and hygiene and the art therapy to be the most effective. Not only do the refugees get art, they learn how to improve their health and they get mental health services to deal with the trauma of being a refuge.

    • I think the most effective art initiative is The Za’atari Project. This aims at empowering refugees through extra-ordinary public murals and educational art workshops. Since the art initiative not only focuses on arts but also emphasizes the useful educational topics, this gives the refugees an opportunity to make the arts and at the same time be able to be educated on other aspects of life. This helps the refugees have a sense of what is happening around the world especially in the area of education. The initiative has an aspect of education is capable of teaching the refugees about the future aspects of life. This gives tactics and ways that they can survive on their own outside the refugee camps. Therefore, this art initiative can be of great value to the refugees

    • I think the most effective art initiative is Paint Outside the Lines because it has to do with children. It encourages children to express themselves and it empowers young people to be more creative. They get to be creative around their community which is pretty nice and voice their artwork.

    • I think that the Paint Outside the Lines art initiative would be the most effective. The reason being is because it gives a chance for the kids to be creative during these times as well as being able to provide a voice for them.

    • The most effective one is Exile Voices because pictures are taken at the moment in real life. The ability to tell stories in the refugee camps with pictures can say a thousand words. Even taking pictures of their everyday life in the camps can give people a glance at what many cannot see. With many of them being kids, they are able to express a lot more vividly the pictures when they take them, whether it is for a birthday or just having fun.

    • I believe the “#4 Skoun – supporting refugees through therapeutic art is very effective” since mental health is a very important topic and these people who went through a lot, should have a way to understand themselves and their feeling. And I believe art is a great way to demystify mental health issues.

    • I think the most effective one is UNHCR because it demonstrates how with art and unity beautiful things can be accomplished. The project required many from the community to be involved. The project had the ability to bring everyone together and collaborate while focusing on ‘Hope’, ‘Memories’ and ‘The Impact of War On Families’.
