It was my first time in Germany, and I had a great time.

The architecture, the crisp air (without the humidity of DC), the delicious cuisine and bier.

Actually, my primary purpose to visit Germany was to learn more about the military.

As a counselor-in-training I felt compelled to familiarize myself with some of the unique experiences of this culture.

The trip was led by Dr Lisa Jackson-Cherry, Counseling Department Chair.

A total of nine students in counseling attended the program in late October 2012.

We attended briefings on acute issues, such as sexual assault, domestic violence, substance abuse, and suicide in the military.  We participated in discussions about treatment practices of post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury.

We attended the annual convention of the European Branch of the American Counseling Association.

I presented a literature review on resilience and obtained feedback from chaplains, psychiatrists, and counselors working on military installations. It was a meaningful experience that increased my knowledge about this unique culture.

But it was not all work.

We had time for sight-seeing and shopping.

While Germans know about beer and meats, compared to American sweets, their desserts are just not sweet enough.

…unless you go to Schokoladen Museum in Koln.

I headed to Cologne at the end of the Study Abroad program to visit some friends.
