As an English major, I have discovered the importance of close readings and research. It is by exercising critical analysis and researching authors and time periods that we are able to better understand all types of works. This website will explore one particular poem written in the Victorian era by author Arthur Hugh Clough, “Epi-strauss-ium” which draws on religion, faith, and the skepticism that resulted from the development of science in that era.  After navigating through the website you will have a clear interpretation of the poem, a brief biography of the author and historical background as it applies to the poem.
