Jobs and Internships with English

Welcome to “Jobs and Internships with English”. This website is dedicated to listing current opportunities in the English field for Marymount University students and alumni. Choosing your internship is a very personal experience, so please meet with Dr. Howe or your academic advisor, and/or and Career Services prior to starting your internship search. Students graduating with an English degree can work almost anywhere as a valued colleague–the question is in what environment will you be most happy?

Do you like working in jeans and having control over your required hours, but don’t mind working on weekends or at special events? The non-profit world may be for you. Do you like stability, routine, and clear job expectations? The Federal Government might be a good choice. Do you like a fast-paced environment with greater sense of accountability? Private sector may be a good fit. You can also explore specific areas of interest (obsessed with preservation of Arctic wilderness? There’s an internship for you!) This site features some placements where we’ve had for English interns in the past, as well as associated places to work. Use these website posts to brainstorm, and also visit Handshake for more ideas.

Here, also, is a link to an article with good advice for how English majors can prepare themselves for success on the job market.

Some good general databases with internship postings include these sites:

Tips on Informational Interviewing
Remember as a student completing an internship for academic credit, you have a built in network at your internship placement. Start by asking your supervisor and co-workers for names of people in fields that interest you. This is NOT a job interview, but rather a chance to learn more about a field from an insider, and to expand your network of connections. Here’s a good site to help you prepare for the interview.
